People always rave about the Bratwurst in Germany. In Berlin, Currywurst is an institution. If you’re there for a while and feel the need for a little more, slightly decadent dining…as in – sitting at a table with a chair….and cutlery, not a bench outside on the pavement..then I suggest you try one of the many Italian restaurants you can find in the city. This one was exceptional…and not a currywurst in sight!
OSTERIA FIORELLO
THE VIBE – Located in a leafy street in neighborhood Prenzlauer Berg, surrounded by friendly bars (only a 10 euro cab ride from Hauptbahnhof), this is a little gem of a restaurant. Family owned an operated, it feels like it should be located near Campo di Fiori in Rome! Sit in or out and blankets provided if the night gets chilly. We went with our friends from Frankfurt, and locals tell us they wonder how good food like this can be so reasonably priced. But then Berlin is currently one of the cheapest western world cities to stay and eat.
THE FOOD – We started with an excellent platter of 8 or 10 types of antipasto. My main dish from the specials of the day was home made Papadalle with Salmon in a light lobster sauce. The locals are right…how could they produce food like this for 10 euro’s? I was astounded. Michelle had Monkfish in spiced tomato sauce (18 euros). A Tagliatelle Tartuffe (14eu) was pronounced ‘the best’ by our friend.
THE DRINK – An excellent Nipozzano Tuscan red at 29eu helped the food disappear.
SUMMARY – There are what seems like thousands of Italian restaurants in Berlin. In 24 visits to Berlin, I have eaten in many. This is as good as it gets. Super friendly service and free limoncellos or grappas to finish. Italiaphile heaven.
