Phnom Penh Gem

We recently stayed in what was to be a ‘surprise find’ in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.  Whilst around a 3-star, The Willow Boutique Hotel is a sophisticated 16 room, nicely renovated, traditional Cambodian villa. Formally, fancy government offices, it gives that glamorous bygone-era feel as you ascend the lovely wooden staircase to your room. Owned & operated by an enterprising Australian woman, Eliza and her Khmer husband, she told us of the challenges they’d had to take over the building & transform it to an accommodation house.  Her lovely, and many practical touches throughout are noticeable. She uses her name as the WIFI code (complimentary as well!) which was a nice touch & ensured we didn’t forget it!

After some research, we booked online at an off-season rate of US$37 B&B for the 2 of us – yep, a bargain! The Willow is like staying in a private home albeit with hotel services and gracious hosts who just cannot do enough for you…nothing was a bother at all. The included breakfast in the garden courtyard was light, but perfect in the hot climate and not only included a coffee…but an illy espresso made by barista-trained staff. We were stoked!! Yes, I know…we’re kinda easily pleased! BUT…when you’ve been on the road as long as we have, it’s the simple things that you really miss.

Sokha, the ‘resident’ Tuk Tuk driver, took us to the Russian market, toured us around the city for 2 hours, and provided round trip transfers to the delicious and inexpensive Yumi Japanese restaurant for dinner (also a recommendation from our host), all for $10 for the day! Oh, and during our tour, he provided us with a warm baguette fresh fom the oven and organic mangoes gratis from a roadside stop. A lovely humble driver/guide who spoke excellent English.

A perfect stay in what is a truly fascinating country.
